The Angels have lost 25-year old righty swinging outfielder Chris Pettit for the 2010 season. He underwent surgery earlier today to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Pettit played in 10 games for the Angels last season and he was 2 of 7 (.286 avg, .571 OPS) with 2 runs scored. He also played in 100 games in Rookie+A-ball last season in which he was 124 of 385 (.322 avg, .867 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 8 homers, 59 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Pettit was the Angels’ #16 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. This is a bad break for both Pettit and the Angels as he had a legit chance to make the team as a reserve outfielder this spring.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Jose Arredondo

25-year old righty reliever Jose Arredondo will miss all of the 2010 season and likely part of the 2011 season as he is due to have Tommy John Surgery soon. Arredondo pitched in 43 games (0 starts) for the Angels last season and he was 2-3 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. He has now pitched in 95 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Angels and he is 12-5 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. This is a big blow to the Angels’ bullpen as they were depending on him to pitch late in games.

UPDATE: The Angels did not tender a contract for the 2010 season to Arredondo pretty much ending his time with the Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels place Kelvim Escobar back on the D.L.

The Angels have placed righty starting pitcher Kelvim Escobar back on the disabled list after just one start. He lost the game allowing 2 earned runs and 8 baserunners in only 5 innings. The thinking in the Angels’ front office is to make Escobar a relief pitcher when he’s ready to return to protect his arm.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Scot Shields

The Angels have lost set-up man Scot Shields for the season due to knee surgery. Shields was pitching awful this season and maybe his bad knee was the cause. He pitched in 20 games (0 starts) for the Angels this season and he was 1-3 with 1 save, a 6.62 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. The Angels will miss Shields who has been a big key over the years to the Angels’ bullpen success.

The Los Angeles Angels place Darren Oliver on the D.L.

The Angels have placed lefty starter/reliever Darren Oliver on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left triceps. Oliver has pitched in 3 games (1 start) for the Angels this season and he is 0-0 with a 2.35 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. The Angels have recalled rookie righty starting pitcher Matt Palmer to replace Oliver in the starting rotation. Palmer won his debut with the Angels working 6 innings and allowing 6 hits, walked 3 batters and gave up 4 earned runs. Don’t expect miracles out of Palmer who would essentially be the #10 or #11 starter on the Angels if all of their pitchers were healthy.
